A few years ago, Glen Beck, radio talk show and TV host, endorsed a daunting 900+ book, A Patriot’s History of the United States. He admired its positive, unapologetic attitude. The author, Larry Schweikart, also wrote a textbook chronicling the history of business in the United States, titled, The Entrepreneurial Adventure. When Schweikart related business to entrepreneurs, he tapped into the lifeblood of America’s success.

He studied several people listed in a Forbes 400 Richest Americans, and found these common entrepreneurial traits: “They took a leap of faith, either on savings or borrowed funds, to pursue a dream. … [They] stepped out on faith with total and complete dedication.” They’re risk-takers, they excel in identifying and meeting the needs of others, they believe that they can succeed where others can’t, and they see a challenge as an opportunity.

But why does America produce so many entrepreneurs?
In part, America’s entrepreneurship is founded on American Capitalism. According to Schweikart, this foundation is built on three pillars:

  1. Protection of our legal right to own private property
  2. Freedom of enterprise: the right to enter markets of our own choosing
  3. Competition, not government planning, as the primary means of allocating resources.

Eagles need lift under their wings.
Entrepreneurs can’t soar like eagles without wind under their wings. America supplies the lift. So, we need to protect entrepreneurship and support our intrepid, entrepreneurs. Their contribution to our economy and to our country is essential. Buckle up and join the adventure!
